Clearly in the Wrong
There has been little doubt in the international online casino gambling industry
that the United States overstepped the line with the implementation of the UIGEA
(Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act). Over the past several years the
World Trade Organization has stepped in and tried to intervene on the behalf of
the Antiguan government to no avail. Now though, the European Union has
completed a 12 month study into the US’s online casino gambling policies and
concluded much along the same lines as the WTO – that the US is in direct
contravention of international trade rules.
The Remote Gaming Association, representing most of the European online casino
gambling industry, pushed for the EU to conduct the investigation last year.
With that prompting the EU began a formal investigation into the US’s foreign
gambling policy as it pertains to discrimination specifically against European
gambling companies. The delegation sent to the US to speak with the US Trade
Representatives was mostly treated with a bit of dismissal from the previous
administration. That, however, did not stop the continued investigation into the
UIGEA and the way that the Department of Justice has gone about enforcing UIGEA
policies against foreign online casinos.
The formal report has been released and the verdict is most definitely that the
United States is in breach of the WTO foreign trade policies and rules. This
doesn’t really come as a surprise to many in the online casino gambling
industry, there is no doubting that the UIGEA is biased. Now the question is
circulation about just what the Obama Administration plans to do to align itself
with international trade polices and the requests and mandates of the WTO. |
