Blocking the Online Casinos
Countries that have yet to really provide solid online casino gambling
legislation are coming up with some truly controversial methods for blocking the
gambling sites from particular markets. For the US, the attempts to block
financial transactions with the online casinos has proven largely ineffective –
the gamblers just use alternative payment methods. In Australia, the notion of
internet censorship is causing the entire world to look closely at the new
policies that the government is considering implementing. Censorship of the
internet is one of the most controversial methods that several first world
countries are considering using to effectively block controversial Web sites –
they include online gaming sites.
In addition to the controversy in Australia now though, it looks as though the
Swedish government is considering IP blocking as well. IP blocking is mostly
frowned upon by developed nations because there is a fear that IP blocking, or
internet censorship, can be taken too far and thus infringe on basic civil
rights. All of the controversy that IP blocking has caused in Australia though
does not seem to have phased the Swedish government as they considering going
down the same path as a way to not just block the foreign online casinos, but
rather further protect the state monopoly.
There is very little support outside of these governments for the IP Blocking
plans – most politicians and officials believe that this method of blocking the
online casinos is a form of censorship against the basic principles of freedom
of speech and goes against the basic democratic principles that found both of
these nations. |
