Another Bites the Dust
There are some really fine lines and distinctions in the UK advertising industry
that the online casinos and internet gaming sites are having a hard time
understanding and following. There are very strict regulations on what
advertisements for internet gambling sites may contain – they cannot blatantly
appeal to children, they can’t sensationalize gambling, online casino companies
have to be careful that they don’t use sex appeal or image related images to
market their sites…and the list continues. For Tombola Bingo, the regulations
were unclear enough that they were completely not anticipating the recent ban on
their advertising campaign because it was too bright and festive. Apparently,
the colors and fairground images were just a bit too celebratory and one
individual complained to the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).
The ASA reviewed the advertisements and commercials and agreed with that lone
voice that rained on the online caisno bingo site’s theoretical parade. The ASA
banned the commercial on the basis that there were features of the ad that would
appeal to children. This is a really tricky part of the regulation – where is
the line drawn? If children are drawn to bright colors and cheery music in
commercials, does that mean that the online casinos have to avoid this two
essential elements of a good commercial?
This is a core questioned being asked by the online casino gambling industry.
There are some advertisements that the ASA has banned that have been a very
obvious lapse in judgment by the internet gambling companies. In this case,
however, Tombola Bingo still believes that the advertisement was within the
bounds of the advertising restrictions. |
