PPA Still Active

The Poker Players Alliance (PPA) is one of the most powerful lobbying groups in the online casino gambling industry. The PPA represents the interests of the US internet gambling industry and the lobbying group spends hundreds of thousands of dollars a year on educating the politicians in Washington about the game of poker. The PPA is specifically looking for politicians to alter the classification of poker – currently internet poker is classified like any online casino game, as a game of chance. The PPA on the other hand firmly asserts that poker is a game of primarily skill. The latest out of the PPA is the backing of a new study that looks at the role that skill plays in the game of Texas Hold’em.

The study, “Statistical Analysis of Texas Hold’em,” provides raw data that indicates that the outcome poker games, both at online casinos and land gambling venues, are hugely affected by the skill of the players rather than the chance drawing of the cards in the deck. This new study, conducted by Cigital Inc (and backed by PokerStars.com) is just the latest in a lot of new research evidence that is being published about the online casino poker gambling industry. The PPA has a pretty big fight on their hands when it comes to altering the classification of poker and creating exemptions with the UIGEA for internet poker, so new research is always welcomed.

Although the chairpersons at the PPA believe this new study will provide further proof of their claims, the fact that the research study is backed by the online casino poker gambling industry could hurt their cause. Other studies however, have recently come to the same conclusions and are independently conducted by Universities.
