Quite Acceptance
The Canadian online casino gambling industry has been a major concern over the
past several years and a lot of fervor and media attention brought the issue of
illegal internet gambling right to the politicians and policy makers. For a
while it seemed as if the Canadians themselves, backed by outraged interest
groups and racetrack owners were going to force the government to take action
against all of the illegal internet gambling activity that takes place within
Canada. The government began to assess the issue and talk about the negative
effects of an unregulated online casino gambling industry on the country’s
economy. All of these talks though have now led nowhere and the issue has been
curbed and pushed to the back burner once again.
A major problem that has stopped the government from acting to stop online
casino gambling in the country is the issue of the licensing jurisdiction of the
Kahnawake Gaming Commission. The Mohawk tribe operates a licensing establishment
that houses servers for online casinos and licenses them to operate in the
internet gambling industry. The Canadian government is largely unsure of its
jurisdiction over the Mohawk tribe. The Mohawks insist that they are a sovereign
nation and thus the Canadian government has no control to limit their licensing
operation. The subject is very sticky though and the government is opting to
trod lightly.
But while the government skirts the issue, online casinos are flourishing in the
Canadian market and are competing with land industries that can not afford the
losses in revenue. Namely, the horseracing tracks are reporting sharp losses as
punters head to the internet bookies for better odds. And though this has been
happening for years, the initial outcry seems to have waned and many supporters
of a regulated internet gambling market are merely slipping into complacency and
quite acceptance. |
