They're Thinking About It
The Australian government is not looking to rush on the decision concerning
poker machines in the country. There has been extensive media coverage thus far
over the debate largely because of the impact that this decision will have on
many forms of gambling in Australia – from land gambling to the online casinos.
The debate has centered on the issue of poker machines that are prevalent
throughout Australia, and, according to some politicians are largely to blame
for the country’s increased problem gambling rates. Others are quick to point to
the spread of internet betting through the online casinos, put poker machines
have been the main target by several Australian politicians.
Newly proposed legislation is at the center of the argument right now. Few
politicians are looking to outright stop the passage of new regulations on poker
machines and even perhaps online casino gambling. But they are looking to slow
down the passage of new legislation until the total picture can come into focus.
The Senate Committee is now reviewing a bill drafted by Fielding and Xenophon –
and according to the drafters the committee is taking their sweet time in the
review process.
The Senate Committee though publicly refuted the accusations that they were
deliberately stalling the passage of the bill and instead pointed to the
importance of ensuring that the bill is well crafted to suit the needs of the
Australian land and online casino gambling industry while also ensuring that the
parts of the bill will actually do what they set out to do – curtail problem
gambling rates by further regulation of poker machines. |
