Online Casino Sites Targeted
There is really no shortage of negative attention that the online casino
gambling industry receives at any given time all over the world. The European
market is largely supportive of the internet gambling companies, but
member-state monopolies in the EU constantly threaten the harmony within this
region. Then you look a little closer and Holland’s current situation is going
south pretty quickly – the Dutch Justice Minister, Hirsch Ballin, has already
attempted to pass legislation remarkably similar to the failed and flawed US
UIGEA. Ballin’s legislation similarly looks to force the Dutch banking industry
to primarily enforce the ban on online casinos by blocking financial
transactions with these illegal gambling sites.
The Dutch banking industry has had much the same reaction as the US banking
industry – a resounding “no.” The flawed legislation is a problem because it
puts the onus of enforcement on the banking industry in both circumstances. The
online casino gambling industry is extremely pervasive and the banking industry
is reticent to take on the primary role of enforcer. Ballin though is willing to
go to heads with all of the those supporting the online casinos, even if it
isn’t winning him any friends.
Because the Dutch banking industry is so anti Ballin’s UIGEA style legislation
it is likely that they will effectively block the implementation for the near
future. But that doesn’t mean that online casinos are out of the woods yet –
Ballin is still looking for nearly any way to protect a Dutch gambling monopoly
while completely blocking foreign online gambling sites. |
