Siding with the Lobbyists
There has been no shortage of news coverage over the US election earlier this
month – the entire world watched the elections with a close eye and most
breathed a sigh of relief when Barack Obama took the election and is now
president-elect of one of the most powerful countries in the world. The only
problem for many is the fact that now that a Democrat is taking office, some in
Washington are hoping to firm up the US’s anti-online casino gambling policy
before the Democrats take control in just two months. The US ban on offshore
online casinos has been a source of great controversy the world over and a
Democratic Representative from Tennessee has laid out some accusations that has
once again focused the spotlight on this issue.
The US online casino gambling issue came to a head this week (and is likely to
continue until Obama is officially inaugurated in January. Tennessee
Representative Steve Cohen has publicly accused a top-ranking member of the Bush
Administration of attempting to place undue pressure on individuals in the
government concerning the offshore ban on online casinos. According to the
accusations, the Bush Administration adviser is pushing for tighter regulations
on the internet gambling industry on behalf of a former lobbying client – now
that’s a source for controversy.
There has been no secret that the Bush Administration is looking to pass through
questionable legislation that will never find passage once a Democrat takes
office. Unfortunately for the internet gambling industry, online casino gambling
is a top priority for some Republican politicians – even in light of the failing
US economy, internet gambling has once again taken center stage. |
