Not Loving the Online Casino Gambling Industry
Australia is proving to be one of the more difficult markets for the land and
online casino gambling industries. The Aussie governments are not wholly against
gambling, but on the same token, there are some family action groups firmly
espousing all of the negative aspects of an expanded land and internet gambling
industry. Taking the heat right now is no longer the online casinos, but rather
poker machines in pubs and betting shops. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is largely
against these machines as are some other prominent politicians. Further
exacerbating the entire situation is the fact that problem gambling is on the
rise and most people are pointing to the rise in online gambling and poker
machines as a primary reason for the increases.
The latest situation comes from a report that Clubs Australian is planning to
begin some measures and efforts to prevent problem gambling and provide
assistance from those gamblers already addicted to forms of land and online
casino gambling. Clubs Australian apparently announced several measures that are
catching a bit of heat right now – one of which involves family interventions as
a method of curbing high problem gambling rates.
And while Clubs Australian (which represents a large portion of the clubs that
allow poker machine gambling) can be applauded for recognizing a problem in the
community and looking to act, the government is looking toward a different
solution – limiting the number of poker machines permissible in each location.
Further government intervention and regulations on behalf of the online caisno
gambling industry is less than desirable for the business, but may be a
necessary move to lower problem gambling statistics in Australia. |
