A Game of Skill
There is no way to really come to a consensus in the global land and online
casino gambling market about the game of poker. Those who play the game are
simply adamant that poker is a game of skill more than chance and therefore
actually above all of the rampant regulations all over the world that
specifically block and limit the online casinos. There is real controversy about
the fact that lotteries are supported by nearly every country in the world and
the state government rarely has a problem with taking a large percentage of the
profits from state lotteries. But online poker gambling on the flip side (and
even land poker gambling to an extent) is looked at as taboo. If you look at the
type of people playing each game though, it seems as though the government is
looking to pray on the masses rather than the elite…and where’s the sense in
that?
Mary Schmich is a columnist for the Chicago Tribune who wholly supports the
licensing, regulation, and taxation of the US online casino gambling industry.
In a recent column Schmich questioned this pervading attitude about the online
poker market versus lotteries. She questions, “Governments back lotteries, which
prey on the stupid. Why should people playing a game of skill such as poker get
the criminal treatment?”
And while the wording of the argument is a bit crass for a high brow discussion
on the topic of global online caisno poker gambling, the sentiment is right on
target. Poker is billed as “thinking man’s game” and there is undeniable at
least some level of skill required. Yet despite this fact poker continues to
face discrimination by countries and governments all over the world. |
