Will It Ever End?
There is just no end in site for the Kentucky fiasco related to the seizure of
online casino domain names. The Kentucky state governor, Steve Beshear, has
attempted to seize the domain names of domestically and foreign registered
internet gambling sites in an effort to not only force the gambling sites out of
the market but to also levy fines on the sites for their past activity in the
market. The presiding judge in the case, Judge Wingate, has a long history at
this point of postponing the rulings and court dates – and wouldn’t you know
that it happened again. The latest news on this situation is that online casinos
and those with threatened domain names have an additional two weeks to comply
with Judge Wingate’s ruling that the sites must geoblock Kentucky gamblers or
face seizure.
Microgaming was one of the first companies to immediate comply with the ruling,
but some of the smaller online casinos and related companies on the list
requested a stay in the case so that they would have longer to comply. Wingate
approved the stay and set December 3, 2008 as the new date for compliance.
The crux of the issue facing many online casinos is that some of the sites will
have a hard time proving that they no longer accept Kentucky gamblers. Huge
companies like Microgaming have the funds to really effectively geoblock and
install new software and technology. The smaller sites on the other hand have
less resources and the previous timeframe was fairly unreasonable. Recognizing
this fact Judge Wingate gave all of the threatened domain names additional time
to comply with his previous ruling. |
