Online Casinos Face Estonian Regulation

The Eastern European online casino gambling industry is in development and as more internet gambling companies target these markets and markets like Estonia, the state governments are forced to look at a whole new range of issues and problems facing the country. The Estonian government just announced that new regulations on the land and internet gambling industries will come into effect at the beginning of the new year given that the president signs the new regulatory measures into law. Estonia is one of those countries that is just now seeing an influx of online casinos and alternative forms of gambling – and with that influx came the realization that the country’s current gambling regulations were ill-equipped to effectively monitor the gambling industry.

The new regulatory changes now provide Estonia with regulations and legislation that is specifically tailored to the online casino gambling industry. The internet gambling industry has a unique set of challenges quite separate from the challenges of the land gambling industry and the pending regulations address these differences. In addition to new regulatory measures aimed at the online casinos, the regulations specify that the state lottery remains in the control of the government and that there are new restrictions in place concerning the number of gaming machines appropriate at licensed gambling venues.

There are some concerns that the new gambling regulations (which provide for a much more liberalized gambling environment) could negatively affect the country’s problem gambling statistics. The problem gambling rate is at 6 percent right now but the influx of more online casinos could increase this number if new programs are not put in place immediately.
