Wagering in Oz Contested
The Australian online casino betting market has made headlines lately as
companies from all over the country have something to say about the situation.
Many online casinos and betting shops are very positive about the slow
liberalization of the Australian betting and gambling market. But opponents to
the gambling industry are ready to fight the spread of land and online betting
throughout Victoria, one of the more populous states in Australia. The internet
casino betting industry has really had some successes lately in regards to
Betfair winning the right to operate in the market and the liberalization of
advertising restrictions in the Western Australia – but there is a select group
of opponents firmly opposed to the continued spread and prevalence of betting
within Victoria.
Victoria has been traditionally against the online casino gambling industry for
quite a while now but the state had a bit of a change of heart recently and
instead quietly announced that the state would legalize and license betting
companies throughout the state. And while there is much opposition to the
liberalization of Victoria’s online casino betting market, the new changes are
actually quite conservative. Gaming Minister Tony Robinson elaborated, "The
Government believes that betting exchanges, like totalisers and bookmakers,
should be able to advertise, provided the advertisements conform to the
Government's responsible gambling principles."
The racing industry throughout Australia has been reporting record lows in terms
of wagers and betting. For that reason, successfully implementing an online
casino betting industry that is partnered with the land horseracing and sports
groups, could have a very positive effect on the lagging racing industry. |
