Clarifying EU Online Casino Industry
The issue of land and online casino gambling monopolies in the European Union
has really lit some fires in the industry over the past several years and there
appears to be no end in sight over the controversy. Several individual EU member
states continue to assert their right to operate gambling monopolies as a way to
protect the interests of their residents. But a the same time, the European
Commission asserts that the EU policies dictate an open gambling market in which
foreign online casinos and gambling companies should have access to the gambling
markets within any other EU member-state. A new draft report in the EU is up for
consideration by the European Parliament and that report has the potential to
seriously give credence to the gambling monopolies and thus negatively affect
the internet casinos operating in the EU.
The report largely looks to have the European Parliament officially acknowledge
that individual member-states have the right to introduce restrictions,
regulations, and even implement monopolies as a way to protect state citizens
from the ills associated with gambling at the online casinos. The report is
pretty open-ended in that it does not seek to outright support online gambling
monopolies but rather give tacit approval to the state monopolies. According to
the information, even if the new policy comes into effect the European
Commission would still have a cause to fight against the internet casino
gambling monopolies.
The full affects on the online casino gambling industry are really rather minor
and there is a question to whether any of this will even find approval within
the European Parliament. More information is due out of the issue in December
and early on in the new year. |
