Why Bother?
The internet gambling market in the US has become so segmented and difficult
that many online casinos are looking to just jump ship entirely and exit the US
market. Rumors have been circling for weeks now that the Grand Prive gambling
group planned to exit the entire US market – those rumors have now been wholly
confirmed by the gambling group itself. Affiliates for the online casino
gambling group were the first to report that Grand Prive planned to leave the US
market – this is a startling trend that really indicates just how bad the
internet gambling industry in the US has become. The Kentucky situation and news
that the Bush administration pushed through the flawed and controversial UIGEA
regulations are likely just one of the straws that tipped the situation for
Grand Prive.
Grand Prive’s announcement comes on the heels of an announcement from
Microgaming that all Microgaming powered online casinos and poker gambling sites
would stop servicing a set list of US states through geo-blocking technology.
The list of blocked states is used at the Microgaming level to block online
casino gamblers based on their ISP (and ISP blocking software will not fool
Microgaming’s technology). With Microgaming now blocking a large portion of the
US online gambling market, Grand Prive likely feels that there is profit to be
made elsewhere.
Grand Prive sent a very apologetic and pointed email that noted that as of
December 1st the company’s US facing affiliate program will no longer be
operating. The emailed letter to affiliates also included information on the
newly launched European facing affiliate program, Villa Fortuna Affiliates,
which will focus affiliates on finding European online casino gamblers for the
site. |
