Appealing the Kentucky Case
The newest news out of Kentucky may actually do a bit of good for the online
casino gambling industry – if of course the recently lodged appeal causes a
different outcome. There is no shortage of information on the internet about the
Kentucky case thus far and GambleCraft actually also has extensive information
on the case in the new archives. But for a brief recap – the Kentucky courts
sided in favor of the Kentucky governor’s request to seize the domain names of
online casinos and gambling companies that target and accept Kentucky gamblers.
The court case took several weeks to decide and was frequently postponed. The
judgment though came last week and indicates that internet gambling companies
have just one month to block Kentucky gamblers or they will face domain name
seizure.
But some in the industry refuse to just stand by and watch the Kentucky
government pass this highly questionable legislation that has the power to not
only rock the online casino gambling industry, but the protocol surrounding
internet domain names period. IMEGA (the Interactive Media Entertainment &
Gaming Association) protested the domain name seizure prior to the ruling and
now that the online casinos are scrambling to install geo-blocking technology at
the sites, IMEGA is looking to take a stand against the unfair prosecution of
online gambling sites.
IMEGA just this week confirmed that it has filed an appeal to the ruling and
actually filed a writ of mandamus, which goes a step above simply appealing the
case to the next higher court. |
