Online Casinos Appeal to Congress
The US internet gambling industry has been the hot ticket item on the agenda of
both Democrats and Republicans over the past two years and all of the
controversy has really come to a head in the past several weeks as the Bush
administration attempts to push through midnight legislation that would
negatively affect the online casinos and internet gambling industry. The
controversy though could be a moot point in the coming months and years as the
potential tax revenue from the internet gambling industry weighs on the mind of
Congress. The US is in a very precarious financial situation right now and tax
revenues from online casinos is quickly becoming an enticing option with
bipartisan support.
The issue comes down to the fact that even with the online casino gambling
support regulations for the UIGEA passing into law, there will be a level of
gambling taking place in the country under the radar of the government. All of
this black market gambling is not only dangerous for US citizens, but it is also
a situation where the US government is losing out on potential tax revenues. The
head of the American Gaming Association, Frank Fahrenkopf, opines that Congress
will likely have some tough choices ahead where the online casino gambling
industry is concerned.
This is likely to become one of the top issues facing Congress over the next
couple of years – the potential tax revenue is very appealing, yet at the same
time, many Republicans in Congress have gone out of their way (and employed
questionably ethical tactics) to block offshore online casinos. |
