Affect on Nevada
News concerning the US online casino gambling industry has been rampant in the
media over the past several weeks as the results of the US presidential
elections mean that members of the Bush administration have only a short period
of time to pass through dozens of new bills that would undoubtedly be vetoed if
left for the next Congressional session (when the Democrats will have control).
With the threat of UIGEA regulations passing through many in the land and online
casino gambling industry are growing concerned with the state of the industry.
New reports about the likelihood that Congress will eventually legalize online
casinos in the US as a way to gain tax revenue from the industry has some land
gambling companies in Nevada concerned – others though are hopeful.
The fact of the matter is that yes, legalizing online casino gambling in the US
would have an affect on the number of US players using the land betting
facilities. That is a big concern for the casinos in Las Vegas and throughout
Nevada. But at the same time, some of the largest land gambling companies in
Nevada have commented that they would welcome a regulated and taxed online
casino gambling industry. Harrah’s owns the WSOP brand which dominates the land
poker industry. With the legalization of internet casinos, Harrah’s would most
certainly look for ways to bring that brand to the internet and capitalize on
the popularity of the WSOP.
But on the same token, some land gambling giants like MGM are less optimistic
about the positive aspects of a legalized online casino gambling industry.
Unless the land gambling company has an express interest in operating in the
online gambling market, the internet gambling industry would take away revenues
from the company’s land gambling ventures. |
