Internet Becomes Addiction
We’ve all heard the media reports over the past several years concerning
internet addiction. And to the older generation this problem may seem very new
age-y and ridiculous, but to the many underage and adolescents addicted to the
internet, gambling, video games, and even online casino gambling, internet
addiction becomes a very real concern. A Canadian clinic in Toronto is one of
the first in the world to add internet addiction into its list of treatable
problems for adolescents. Basically, the same reasons and needs that cause an
addiction to video games and gambling are also present when adolescents turn to
the internet and the online casinos for solace.
The Centre for Addition and Mental Health (ACES) only recently added counseling
for internet addiction to its services, and the head of clinical at ACES, Bruce
Ballon, commented that the facility felt the new service was needed considering
the large volume of calls ACES received concerning internet addiction and its
counterpart – online casino gambling addiction.
Ballon noted his reasoning on adding the new program, “it's just another
manifestation or coping mechanism or strategy to deal with other issues,” and
because of the similarities of the root cause, the company was ideally suited to
also deal with internet addiction without too much extra expense and
restructuring.
ACES focuses not only on overcoming the addiction to the internet, online casino
gambling, video games, or whatever the addiction, but also on uncovering the
root cause of the addiction. Many times the addicted adolescents use these vices
as a way to overcome low self-esteem issues, social anxiety, and even some
mental illnesses can manifest through addictive behavior. |
