Who Supports HR 5767?
The latest online casinos gambling bill in Congress is an effort to stop the
continued implementation and enforcement of the highly controversial Unlawful
Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). HR 5767 was introduced in early April
by two Congressmen who are at the forefront of the online casinos gambling
issue, Congressmen Barney Frank and presidential hopeful Ron Paul. The bill is
designed to specifically block the federal government from finishing and
implementing the drafted regulations in support of the 20006 UIGEA. The UIGEA is
a fundamentally flawed piece of legislation that has caused controversy not only
in the United States, but on an international level with the World Trade
Organization.
Congressman Frank is well known for another bill he has circulating Congress,
the Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act (IGREA). The two bills are
separate, but really, HR 5767 is just an initial stepping stone to fixing the
mess created in the international online casinos gambling industry by the UIGEA.
While Frank is still pushing for support of IGREA, he is also looking to
implement HR 5767 immediately to stop the UIGEA from progressing too far and
creating irreparable damage within the financial services sector.
Right now HR 5767 has 10 co-sponsors signed on in support; interestingly all ten
are also co-sponsors on IGREA. The ten supporters include:
Gary Ackerman (D-NY)
Shelley Berkley (D-NV.)
William Lacy Clay (D-MO)
Bob Filner (D-CA.)
Luis Gutierrez (D-IL.)
Michael Honda (D-CA)
Peter King (R-NY)
James McGovern (D-MA)
James Moran (D-VA.)
Robert Wexler (D-FL)
Like his IGREA bill though, this piece of online casinos gambling legislation
could spend a fair amount of time in Congress before, if ever actually passing.
