Land and Online Casino Professionals Unite
The well-known land poker tournament, the World Poker Tour (WPT) is now seeing
the conclusion of a drawn out lawsuit against the WPT. A handful of prominent
land and online casinos poker gambling professionals sued the World Poker Tour
Enterprises Inc. because the company mandated the signing of a player release
form for every WPT participant. The crux of the issue for the land and online
casinos poker gamblers comes down to the fact that many celebrity and top
professional players have contracts with other companies concerning the rights
to their likeness and other things mentioned in the release. These professionals
were denied entry into the WPT competition because of refusal to sign said
release, which led to the problems that have only just found resolution in the
courts.
The lawsuit that has caused concern and speculation throughout the land and
online casinos industry has just reached settlement a few weeks ago and all
concerned on both sides are ready to move on from the issue. The plaintiffs in
the lawsuit did not receive any pecuniary damages from the settlement, but the
settlement did bring resolution to the ongoing dispute over the forced player
release forms.
The handful of land and online casinos poker professionals involved in the
dispute were: Andrew Block, Annie Duke, Chris Ferguson, Phil Gordon, and Howard
Lederer. Two others were initially involved in the dispute but they dropped out
of the case throughout the long proceedings: Joe Hachem and Greg Raymer.
As for the WPT, a company statement concerning the dispute with the land and
online casinos professionals firmly noted that though the company chose to
settle the dispute, "WPTE continues to deny any liability or wrongdoing.” The
statement also noted that the rationale behind settling the dispute centered on
“[settling] its differences with the players so that the tour can focus on its
continued growth rather than litigation." |
