And it Starts Again
The patent disputes are far from over, as previously reported on GambleCraft.
1st Technology has filed seven new patent infringement lawsuits against offshore
online casinos gambling companies – one can only hope that these new cases will
run more smoothly than the ongoing dispute between 1st Technology and Bodog
Entertainment. There is no current resolution to the Bodog case because neither
side is willing to give an inch in the case, but Bodog is almost entirely
outside of the sphere of U.S. influence (all excepting the company’s previous
domain name). The new cases though concern the same technology patent that has
been the center of several patent disputes at this point.
The question at the heart of these patent dispute concerns intellectual property
and the ability of 1st Technology to conceivably apply that patent to offshore
online casinos gambling companies that are still operating in the United States.
Dr. Scott Lewis, the top-gun at 1st Technology, commented on the new patent
lawsuits against more online casinos. He notes, "Our initial goal here, as in
all of our cases, is to reach swift and fair settlements that respect our
intellectual property rights for companies with U.S. facing operations and
utilize our patents...if we are unable to reach a swift resolution of the
dispute, we move forward quickly and apply all of our resources to enforce all
of our U.S. legal rights."
The moving forward quickly is the hard part for 1st Technology – if the
companies are not willing to settle like amicably like the Sportingbet
resolution, then the companies are forced to battle it out in the U.S. courts.
The Bodog case illustrates that there are only minor victories for 1st
Technology if the online casino is not willing to settle for a sum and then
license the technology. |
