A Slow Change for France

The French government is slowly moving toward complying with the European Commission’s demands for a level playing field related to online casinos gambling and betting activities. Some in Europe though, and the British Parliament in particular are not necessarily pleased with the progress toward eliminating the French online casinos gambling and betting monopoly, and members of Parliament were particularly critical of the existing laws that equate foreign internet gambling and betting with downloading child pornography (much like the U.S. Washington State legislation). Lord James of the Opposition Conservative Party was very harsh in his criticism of the ongoing problems with the French online gambling market.

The European Commission has spent extensive effort in negotiations and discussions with the EU member-states running online casinos gambling and betting monopolies to no avail at this point. There has been some indication in the French media lately that the government plans to come into compliance with EU free trade policies, but some in the British government are considering alternatives that may more quickly for the French government to pass compliant legislation.

Specifically, right now the French government places extremely harsh fines on the French gamblers placing bets at online casinos and betting companies outside of the French monopolies. Lord James has opined that perhaps the British government should pass equally harsh reciprocate legislation – fines for French online casinos accepting bets from British gamblers. And while that might appease a sense of vindictive justice, Lord Davies of Oldham noted, “The European Commission has made it clear that the French law is not acceptable within the framework of the European Community, and as a consequence we have no intention of following that atrocious example.” So for now it seems that the two countries are at an impasse concerning online gambling and betting policy.
