It's Not Just a Question of Safety
Some French proponents of the country’s state-run online casinos gambling
monopoly continue the argument that a government-run monopoly is safer for the
gamblers. This argument was recently raised in the House of the Lords meeting in
the British Parliament…and as fast as anyone could raise the point there was far
more evidence to suggest that the argument is bunk and just an excuse to benefit
from an extremely lucrative gambling monopoly. The ongoing French online casinos
gambling monopoly is an ongoing source of contention in Great Britain as the
government waits for the rumored new French online gambling policy legislation
that is more in tune with EU policies.
The fact is, state run monopolies are quick to point out that foreign online
casinos increase the chances of a country dealing with unwanted gambling
addictions and underage gambling. The argument contends that monopolies are
better suited to stopping these unwanted activities. But the argument in the
British Parliament centered on the idea that the online casinos in the UK and
most of Europe abide by strict regulations (though stricter in the UK than some
European licensing jurisdictions) that prevent unwanted underage online gambling
activities.
Lord Davies of Oldham commented on the issue of underage gambling noting that
although there were some differences concerning regulations of online casinos
outside of the UK, that there are still very few complaints about underage
gambling at this point. And on that note, Davies “[sees] no reason why we need
to change our regulatory framework which seems to be working satisfactorily.”
The government is watching the underage gambling issue carefully and is fully
willing to make changes through the UK Gambling Commission if needed. In that
way, the “safety” debate should not actually factor into online casinos gambling
monopoly debate.
