Interesting Previous Offer
The Canadian government had the opportunity to join with the Mohawk tribe just
as they were launching into the online casinos gambling industry nearly a decade
ago according to recent media reports. Apparently, the Grand Chief of the
Mohawks indicated at the Canadian Gaming Summit that the Mohawks were interested
in forming a partnership with either the Ottawa or Quebec governments, but the
offer for partnership was turned down – a move that may not seem quite so wise
now that the Kahnawake online casinos gambling industry is exceedingly
lucrative.
Kahnawake Grand Chief Joe Norton remarked on the offer at a conference at the
Summit, "We offered both Canada and Quebec an opportunity to be a partner with
us but they wouldn't." Norton continued on with more specifics concerning the
nature and timing of the offer, as well as the eventual and firm “no, thanks”
that the Mohawks received back from Quebec. Although it seems that the deal was
initially looked on as favorable between Quebec and the Mohawks at the beginning
of the online casinos gambling venture, after delayed negotiations, the former
Native Affairs Minister, Guy Chevrette, commented on the Mohawks venture into
internet gambling, "I'm sorry, I've been advised as a minister, that this is
illegal and I can't sign it."
This revelation about a proposed partnership is new news to many in the online
casinos gambling industry and comes at a time when many in Canada and the
Canadian government are questioning the legality of the Kahnawake gambling
initiatives.
