Flooding Congress with Letters
The United States is the home of freedom of speech, a democratic voting system,
and the ability of the people of the U.S. to express their opinions directly to
the politicians in charge of making new legislation. The online casino gambling
issue has hit home for millions of Americans who think that Congress overstepped
its rights in 2006 with the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling
Enforcement Act (UIGEA). And now that last month’s Congressional hearing was
portrayed the UIGEA as largely ineffective and burdensome, the Poker Players
Alliance is rallying the members of the PPA to push Congress for change.
Congressman Barney Frank and Representative Ron Paul have put a new bill before
Congress that has the power to completely neutralize the UIGEA and instead
license and regulate the U.S. online casinos gambling industry. The PPA has
officially endorsed support for Congressman Frank’s bill, HR 5767 and has
encouraged the more than one million members of the PPA to show their support
for Frank’s bill by sending letters to Congress and attending town hall meetings
with politicians and lawmakers who have the ability to affect change on the
online casino gambling issue.
Frank alleges that the UIGEA “infringes upon two freedoms that are important to
many Americans: the ability to do with their money as they see fit and the
freedom from government interference with the Internet.” It seems that millions
of American agree with Frank and the PPA’s endorsement of the new bill as
already individuals have sent 20,000 letters to Congress just in the past month.
This level of support indicates that the online casino gambling issue is more
important to many Americans than some politicians may have initially assumed. |
