It's a Dangerous Medium
The Internet is a powerful tool that has forever changed the way that humans
communicate. The ability of information at your fingertips online was science
fiction just a century ago, but the technological surges in the last several
decades mean that humans around the world are quickly adapting to the new
technologies and new capabilities. Unfortunately, as fast as the humans can
develop new technology, others are developing ways to trick, scam, and cheat
others out of their earnings, and the online commerce world is quickly becoming
a hotspot for Internet based crime.
There are hundreds of ways for individuals to use the Internet, from playing
games at the online casinos to shopping, paying bills, communicating via chat
rooms and more, there is certainly good out there and benefits to the online
community that cannot be overstated. But at the same time, where there is money
there is crime, and a new study out of the FBI’s National White Collar Crime
Center, online fraudulent activity is on the rise.
The new report of statistics shows that individuals are losing large sums of
money to online scams and fraud - $240 million was lost in 2007 according to the
FBI. Fraudsters will use the online casinos, credit card numbers, identity
theft, and auction fraud to cheat others out of money. And according to the 2007
figures, online auction fraud is what individuals should watch out for – paying
for a good or service that is later not received was the top reported for of
Internet crime in 2007. |
