France Attempts to Control Online Betting

A Belgian court ruling upholds some of the new online casinos gambling and betting tendencies recently. Namely, the European Commission and other bodies are looking to stop state run gambling monopolies in as many as ten EU member states. The recent court case in Belgium sided with the online casinos betting companies that were allowing sportsbetting on the Roland Garros French Open and Paris Masters. The French Tennis Federation (FFT) was interested in blocking other internet betting companies from accessing the bettors interested in betting on the French sporting activity. In a bold and much-anticipated move, the Belgian courts ruled in favor of the online casinos and betting companies because of the high standards at the majority of EU internet gambling companies.

The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) openly applauded the judge on weighing all of the facts and for comments in support of the EU’s high online caisons gambling regulation and standards. The Secretary General for the EGBA commented, “EU-licensed bookmakers are professionals that have a high level of expertise, know-how and risk management skills. This has been clearly recognised by the Belgian judge looking at the fact-based evidence to dismiss all the claims in this case.”

Further, the judge mandated that the FFT pay for the legal costs associated with the cases to the online casinos and betting companies. The FFT was looking to block betting on the activity although there were simply no real grounds for the case. The judge commented that the Tennis matches were a sporting event, and therefore the citizens have the right to then head over to the internet betting companies and bet on any EU and beyond sporting events taking place.
