A Blatant Message for Storm
Plans for the Russian land casino gambling group Storm International BV to set
up shop in Costa Rica may have just been permanently derailed by new legislation
in Costa Rica that place much more stringent restrictions and regulations on the
country’s land casino gambling industry. Costa Rica has long been known as a
haven for both land and online casinos gambling operators because the country
had very few regulations in place concerning the gambling industry. But all of
that is in the beginning stages of change as the Costa Rican government makes
move to seriously limit the extent of the land casino gambling industry in the
country and further discourage new land gambling companies from entering the
industry.
Some in the land and online casinos gambling industry speculate that perhaps the
announcement just a few months ago by Storm International concerning plans to
move operations out of Russia and into Costa Rica prompted the government to
reassess the lack of legislation and regulations regarding land gambling in the
country. Just last year Russia passed some very tight controls on the country’s
internet gambling activities that caused many land casinos to look to new
regions for new locations with more welcoming gambling regulations.
The Costa Rican Vice President, Laura Chinchilla, commented on the new
legislation that will initially take effect this summer. There is no indication
at this point if the government plans to similarly tighten regulations within
the country’s online casinos gambling industry, but the latest changes will
assuredly discourage new gambling companies from moving into Costa Rica… and
according to Chinchilla that is precisely the message the government is hoping
to send.
