Antitrust Fines for Online Casino Gambling
The Korean government is not putting up with monopolies and trusts as is
indicated by the more than GBP 100,000 in antitrust fines against the NHN
company. NHN operates a majority of the Internet services in Korea as well as
operating an online casinos gambling business. The gambling group has fallen
under the problems that some of the countries in the EU are facing, exclusive
and monopolistic practices that violate government legislation. For the NHN
internet and online gambling group though, the practices have come under the
scrutiny of the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) and as such were subject to fines.
The fact is, NHN’s behavior for a long period of time has been under scrutiny
and recent restrictions that the NHN company put on other internet gambling
providers led to the recent threats of an antitrust lawsuit. NHN operates a
powerful search engine tool that handles a majority of the online search engine
queries. According to the FTC and other internet companies in the Korean
internet industry (like NC Soft), NHN’s recent policies restricted access to the
Naver database portal.
NHN not only operates the Naver portal for searches, but also an online casino
gambling business, Hangame. The Korea Times was critical of the gambling side of
NHN’s business and referred that business as “dubious.” Besides the company’s
online gambling practices, the general behaviors and policies can into question.
Now that the FTC is involved though, NHN will be under constant monitoring
certainly for the near future.
The final figures on the fines facing NHN came in at 227 million won, which
translates into roughly GBP 111,000. |
