Tricky Decisions Facing Canada
The Canadian government is facing a lot of speculation from the global online
casinos gambling industry after rumors and reports that a major land horserace
betting company seeks a nation-wide ban on internet gambling. There are current
few regulations in place in the Canadian government to address the number of
online casinos sites licensed by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission. Other
companies (like CryptoLogic although the company recently relocated to Dublin,
Ireland) operate internet gambling companies from locations within Canada. The
problem for many land betting and gambling operators in Canada is they claim
that internet gambling cuts into their profits – and for that they are pushing
for a nation-wide prohibition on online casinos gambling.
Industry analysts though have calmed most of the fears from players and others
in the Canadian online casinos industry by looking at past precedence and the
current global climate. The fact is, Canada traditionally rules in favor of
regulation of debatable issue rather than a straight out prohibition of the
activity. Michael Lipton commented to Casino City that Canadian “history
demonstrates that over the past 50 or 60 years the trend is to regulate, not
prohibit. It happened with horse racing about five years ago. It happened with
land-based casinos in 1969 and then it happened again about seven years ago when
those casinos were allowed to start offering craps so they could compete with
the border casinos."
This means that the uproar and debate within the Canadian online casinos
gambling industry over these latest issues is largely unfounded. Other industry
analysts point to the fact that prohibition in the Untied States has been
extremely poorly received by the global gaming industry and Canada is not likely
to attempt a similar form of legislation. |
