Proposal Rapidly Losing Credibility
Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick’s proposal to bring three land casino
resorts to Massachusetts while restricting the online casinos gambling industry
and other state gambling interest is losing credibility by the day as more and
more groups voice opposition. Governor Patrick and his administration have been
put in the hot seat on several key issues – the fact that the proposal alleges
30,000 construction jobs, or perhaps the fact that the proposal makes online
casinos gambling a major offense in the state, even punishable by jail time.
One of Patrick’s harshest critics is the House Speaker, Salvatore DiMasi. DiMasi
contends that Patrick’s proposal grossly overestimates the number of projected
construction jobs for the three land casinos. But that’s not where the criticism
ends, DiMasi is generally against the new proposal and all aspects of his
proposal from the online casinos gambling ban to the addition of three exclusive
casinos to the state. DiMasi notes, "It seems like we have a proposal where no
tough questions were even asked - let alone answered. The Governor clearly has
the burden of convincing the Legislature that this casino plan should be
adopted. So far, the case has not been made, the evidence isn't there and the
Governor’s arguments for casinos are clearly losing credibility."
Patrick’s administration is left now in the defensive position, justifying parts
of the proposal to the various groups in opposition to his proposal. Members of
the PPA call into question Patrick’s motivation for banning online casinos
gambling in the state while the “Casino Free Mass” interest group is seeking to
stop any and all plans to build three major resort casinos in the state. DiMasi
has it right with his comment that Patrick must now surmount major opposition
and convince the legislation of the necessity of his latest bill. |
