Blocking Questionable Content
The Israeli government is continuing attempts to block questionable content from
citizens – and that content includes online casino and all forms of internet
gambling. The latest bill would have the content blocked right at the Internet
Service Provider (ISP) level and would include a list of what the government
considers questionable content. Previously, a different Member of the Knesset
attempted to pass a bill with similar intentions but a different strategy for
blocking the sites (customer pamphlets with instructions on personally blocking
the online casinos Web sites) – that bill was rejected though.
This latest bill was submitted by Amnon Cohen, a Member of the Knesset, and
would block a all sex sites, any online casinos or internet gambling site, and
Web sites depicting or inciting violence. There are allocations in the ban that
authorize the Israelis to them request permission from the ISPs if they have a
specific site they would like to access.
Online casinos gambling is still a questionable pastime in many countries all
over the world even though the majority of Europe has embraced the activity.
Israel though has been fighting for control over the internet for years as
government politicians continually attempt to find a bill and legislation that
will effectively block certain sites while preserving the freedom of the
Internet.
As for the latest bill that would block online casino sites at the ISPs, the
Economic Affairs Committee is not sold on the bill at this point, and the
Committee’s legal advisor has noted that the bill is difficult to defend as it
is currently written. When the bill is taken to the High Court of Justice the
legal advisor asserts that the bill should be accompanied with a list of the
proposed sex, online gambling, and violent Web sites that will be blocked. |
