Under Canadian Investigation
The Canadian government has a traditionally hands-off approach when it comes to
the country’s online casinos gambling and licensing industry; but all of that
could be in the process of change. According the Canadian news stories, the
Canadian government is currently investigating legislation (or lack of
legislation) regarding internet gambling. The attack seems to be specifically
against Canada’s Mohawk tribe of Kahnawake which currently licenses and
regulates dozens of online casinos gambling sites. The Kahnawake Gaming
Commission has an international internet gambling presence, and the tribe claims
that the Canadian government has no authority to ban or block the tribe’s
internet gambling related activities.
At this point all of the concerns and debate are merely speculation, but the
tribes are adamant that they will not tolerate attempts by the federal
government to block online casinos gambling activities. The tribes are
apparently sovereign nations and therefore not under governmental control.
Canadian Minister of Justice Rob Nicholson has not made any firm decisions on
the issue at this point noted a spokesperson. The spokesperson, Genevieve
Breton, remarked, "Following recent concerns surrounding Internet gambling in
Canada, the Minister of Justice has asked his officials to examine whether the
enforcement of the Criminal Code provisions could be assisted with other
measures.”
Many are theorizing that this investigation could lead to a Canadian ban similar
to the U.S.’s ineffective online casinos ban, the Unlawful Internet Gambling
Enforcement Act (UIEGA). But the fact of the matter is that the U.S.’s ban has
encountered severe problems when it comes to actually enforcing the ban at
financial institutions. Most are now speculating that the Canadian investigation
into the online casino gambling industry will lead to regulation and taxation in
the industry rather than a ban. |
