Following a Massachusetts Bill
Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick is taking the brunt of heated debate over
his latest bill, H.4307, which would bring land gambling to the state while
blocking online casinos gambling. Governor Patrick has taken criticism from a
wide range of groups that challenge both what his bill attempts to do to
Massachusetts as well as his job and revenue predictions. Just last week Patrick
and House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi publically clashed over the number of jobs
that Patrick’s controversial bill would create.
Governor Patrick has also encountered objections from the online casinos
gambling industry because his bill is hypocritical in its support of land
gambling yet denunciation of internet gambling activities in the state. The bill
would in fact make internet gambling a felony offense similar to the laws in
Washington State. Online casinos gamblers could face prison time for the offense
in addition to serious fines. Those involved in the internet gambling industry
challenge Patrick with the accusations that his discriminatory bill attempts to
block internet gambling for the benefit of the land casino gambling industry.
Beyond the clash over the online casinos issue though is an incident between
DiMasi and Patrick over the alleged construction jobs that three resort-style
land casinos would bring to the state. Though Patrick readjusted the predicted
number of jobs, he wrote a letter to members of DiMasi’s Chamber; "At a time of
economic uncertainty, we must be proactive about proposing ideas and reforms
that boost economic activity and create jobs. Attacking ideas without proposing
sound alternatives is not good economic policy, nor what the public expects or
deserves." And while there is truth in the fact that the land casinos would
bring needed jobs to the state, most opponents note that the bill is largely
flawed and will only create other issues (such as problems with the state’s
tribes).
