More Draconian Online Casinos Laws
Many in the United States are quick to point to the laws in Washington State as
draconian and completely lacking regard for constitutional freedoms, but a newly
proposed bill in Israel is shining new light on just how far some governments
will go to control their citizens and “protect” internet users. Member of
Knesset Amnon Cohen has announced a new bill that would block all online casinos
gambling sites, violent oriented sites, and sex related Web sites. The bill
proposes that the country’s Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are responsible
for blocking a governmently assigned list of questionable Web sites.
When the bill was first released many expressed concern about exactly how many
and which Web sites would be affected by the new online casinos, sex and
violence Web site ban. At this point though neither Cohen nor the Communications
Ministry have released more information on which sites will be a part of the
ban. But despite the lack of clarity, it seems that the bill has overwhelming
support in the Knesset after its first reading. The bill has 46 to 20 votes in
favor blocking questionable Web content right at the ISP level.
The bill, as it is currently written would greatly limit Israeli citizens
personal freedoms on the internet, and the president of the Israeli Internet
Association, Rimon Levy, fears what this bill could mean for the country. He
remarks, “"This is a black day for the Internet community in Israel."
The bill is still young, and huge public outcry could alter the initial support
in the Knesset, but as it stands, it could be just a matter of months before
Israelis are blocked from accessing a slew of sex sites, violent sites, and
online casinos gambling sites. |
