Decision Coming Soon
As the debate rages on in Massachusetts concerning Governor Deval Patrick’s land
casinos gambling bill, most are at least relieved that there is an end in site
for the debates – March 18th. Although there is a chance that the decision will
not be made up on the 18th at the scheduled Joint Committee on Economic
Development hearing, most in the land and online casinos industry are hoping
that the government comes to a conclusion. Governor Patrick’s bill has been met
with skepticism from so many in varying industries and different governmental
departments. The fact of the matter is, interest groups are all calling into
question assertions that Patrick puts forward as well as key stipulations in the
bill (such as the one criminalizing online casinos gambling for individual
citizens).
But with an end in site, at least there will hopefully be a reprieve from the
debates after the hearing. Last week Governor Patrick defended his bill against
attacks from the House Speaker, Salvatore DiMasi and this week the bill found
some salvation in the form of a report issued by the Greater Boston Chamber of
Commerce. The GBCC’s report did not touch on the online casinos gambling
concerns that are a key issue for the PPA and other’s with a vested interested
in the U.S. internet gambling industry, but rather validated the bills assertion
that the three proposed land casinos will generate more than 20,000 long-term
jobs and generate more than $400,000 in tax revenue that can then be used by the
state to benefit the Massachusetts citizens.
While there is certainly dissension in the government over bringing in the land
casinos, more and more research is coming out that supports the claims that the
three land gambling resorts are a viable way for the state to fund other
programs. DiMasi is staunchly against Patrick’s bill, on the grounds that there
are false claims about construction jobs and on account of what societal ills an
extensive land gambling industry will bring to the state. |
