Gambling Companies Pressure Nevada
The online casinos gambling industry is looking at Nevada State as a new
potential venue for internet gambling acitivities. Nevada is well known for a
hugely profitable land gambling industry, and those in private internet gambling
sectors are looking to capitalize of federal legislative carve-outs for forms of
internet gambling. Though the U.S. currently has a ban on online casinos and
many games of chance, there are exceptions for games like Fantasy Sports leagues
and online horserace betting.
Then in addition to those legislative carve-outs, many online casinos companies
are pointing to the possibility of exemptions to the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet
Gambling Enforcement Act) that would allow individual states to pass internet
gambling laws. And largely base don that argument many online casino companies
are pressuring for new regulations that would allow internet gambling within
Nevada. The Chairman of the Gaming Control Board for Nevada, Dennis Neilander
commented on the internet interest from internet technology companies. He
remarked, "A number of these groups have said: 'Why don't you look at regulating
it just for Nevada?'”
For that reason the Nevada Gaming Control Board issued a study from the UNLV to
look at the prevalence of online casino gambling activity in Nevada. And
surprising to some, the study found that less than 4 percent of the population
was engaged in any form of internet gambling. Based on those results the Gaming
Control Board is not quick to pass new regulations for internet gambling and are
instead planning on monitoring the industry for an increase in interest in that
sector of the gambling industry.
