Major Search Sites Could Owe Millions
There is not doubting the fact that the U.S. federal government is looking for
scapegoats as the country cuts down on illegal gambling activity. Just weeks ago
the U.S. federal government settled with the more popular search engines for
illegal advertising related to the online casinos industry. But not it seems
that the federal government is not the only people in the U.S. looking to make
the search engines pay for supporting the online casinos industry. In fact,
Google and Yahoo! are facing another trial, this one based in California, for
internet gambling advertising related accusations.
The federal government case concluded that the major search engines owed $31.5
million in the settlement. And though this amount squares the companies up with
the government, Californians are looking for something that the search engines
may feel a bit more than jus $31.5 million. Both Google, Yahoo!, and a few other
prominent search engines are the target of a class action lawsuit that was
brought up in the Californa Supreme Court.
HHBS (Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro) is the law firm handling the class action
lawsuit that really brings home the online casinos issue. As the class action
lawsuit gears up to go to the Californian Supreme Court, the head attorney at
HHBS, Reed Kathrein, commented on why exactly the people are going up against
the major search engines. He remarks, "We believe these companies have been
profiting from this illegal practice for more than a decade, and we believe the
agreement with the government does not go far enough. The settlements are a
great victory and a tacit admission by these online advertisers, but there is
still more work to do in holding these companies accountable for the harm they
have done to Californians, and to keep them and others from continuing these
practices.”
