German Ban Won't Last Long
The German government passed a ban on remote online casinos and bettors that
took effect at the first of the year. And though some Web sites and gambling
companies are concerned by the German ban, the vast majority are just biding
time until the European Commission steps in and forces the German government to
reverse the ban. Germany is a part of the European Union, and as such is bound
by free trade laws between EU nations – the recent ban is in direct opposition
to these free movement of trade and services.
Paddy Power, an online betting site, is not phased by the German ban. Paddy
Power remarked that the withdrawal of German bettors would not be a significant
portion of the betting company’s revenue. This seems to be a shared opinion
among the major betting companies – the ban won’t last long and thus won’t have
a massive impact on company revenue.
Remote betting companies and online casinos are not the only ones though with
opposition to the German ban, several of the major German gambling companies are
pushing for the government to reverse the recent ban.
As for the European Commission, the Commission has actively sought to persuade
the German government to lift protectionist legislation that violates EU trade
agreements, but all request from the Commission were met with refusal.
Germany is not the only European nation to attempt to ban online casinos and
forms of internet gambling – several countries including Sweden, France, and
Norway (technically a Scandinavian country) have also resisted passing open
borders legislation concerning internet gambling companies.
