A Chill in the Air for Internet Gambling
As a new year begins, many online casinos, internet gamblers, and others are
glad to see the end of 2007. Last year was certainly one of the most unstable
years for the industry with the U.S. Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act
(UIGEA) eliminating a large portion of the previous healthy U.S. online casinos
gambling industry. Once the UIGEA passed, only a small percentage of the
internet gamblers continued to gamble, and most of the major online casinos
company left the U.S. market altogether. Then the U.S. spent the majority of
2007 embroiled in cases against internet gambling companies and arresting
individuals involved in U.S. online gambling.
Those activities combined have led to what a UCLV study refers to as the
chilling effect on online casinos gambling. Players are unsure about the
legality of the activity, and added to that, the process of depositing and
withdrawing funds from online casinos sites became increasingly difficult for
U.S. players.
Then U.S. online casinos gamblers and poker players who were concerned about the
constitutionality of the UIGEA took the fight to Washington to address the act
with Congress. And though the UIGEA is still in place, online gamblers have won
over some support from U.S. politicians who are interested in neutralizing the
UIGEA and instead licensing and regulating the activity.
A lead researcher, Bernhard, commented to the Nevada Control Board that "It
became clear that events contemporaneous with our work may have chilling effects
on the patterns of online play. This research was conducted during an
interesting point in time."
Online casinos players in the U.S. are in a transition time, and the U.S.
government is divided on the issue. All of the recent political activity in the
country has led to the chilling effect among players who are unclear of the
precise legal status of internet gambling within the U.S. |
