Online Casino Poker Ban in U.S. State
The United States has banned online casinos gambling – and yes that includes
internet poker. But at the same time, the U.S.’s internet gambling ban, the
Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) only targets the financial
sectors and internet poker players are still able to enjoy the pastime if they
can find a way to funnel their money into the online casinos poker sites. But in
Massachusetts, that just isn’t good enough, the Mass. governor is now looking to
pass new legislation that would specifically make online poker illegal in the
state – a type of law that is only found in one other U.S. state, and even there
draws criticism. Beyond just limiting U.S. players’ civil liberties according to
some, the legislation proposed by Governor Deval Patrick would make poker at the
online casino illegal, but proposes to expand the land-based gambling industry.
That is where a lot of the criticism at this point is coming from the online
casinos and poker enthusiasts are pointing at the hypocritical nature of the
proposed legislation. Governor Patrick has created a piece of legislation that
would keep all of the state’s gambling money right in Massachusetts. Essentially
Governor Patrick has is looking to eliminate the competition for both the state
lottery and the land-based gambling casinos. By banning online poker, players
can only gamble in the expanding lottery venues and the new land casinos.
The loophole in the legislation that would ban poker gambling at the online
casinos was not even mentioned when Governor Patrick first proposed the
legislation. That is why so many in the industry are up in arms, it’s not that
the Governor is morally against gambling – he’s just looking for a way to
eliminate the competition.
If the legislation does pass, online casino poker would carry a felony offense,
and the government will have created an effective way to tax all of the gambling
revenue going through the state.
