New Policies for the Dutch
Dutch online casinos gamblers have just had their choices for internet gambling
sites dramatically decreased with new Dutch regulations in place. The Dutch
government has operated a gambling monopoly prior to the new regulations, but
previously other foreign gambling companies were able to target players in the
Netherlands and still have access to Dutch players. But new Justice Ministry
regulations make it much harder for foreign online casinos to access Dutch
players and process payments from these players. The new regulations in place
put restrictions in place that are actually similar to restrictions in the
United States that put the brunt of the enforcement on financial institutions.
Specifically, the Dutch financial institutions are criminally liable if they
process payments from any online casino company other than Holland Casino, the
government’s official monopoly. And though the new policy is in place
immediately, like the U.S., the financial institutions are left with letter
specifics on how to determine legal transactions and those transactions that are
from foreign online casinos.
To that end, the Dutch government apparently plans to release a list of the
online gaming sites and companies that are banned this coming spring. The
Volkskrant newspaper carried the news although there has been no official press
release on the details from the government. The Justice Ministry reported that
roughly 30 foreign online casinos are currently targeting the Dutch market, and
these 30 companies will be on the spring list of banned sites.
And as for the demands from the European Commission that the Dutch government
re-open the internet casinos industry to foreign operators, the Justice Ministry
claims that the monopoly protects players from criminal activity and protects
vulnerable gamblers. |
