Voluntary Could Turn Mandatory
The Scottish government is pretty fed up with the online casinos gambling
industry, especially the lack of social responsibility that the companies as a
whole showed toward supporting a voluntary fund to combat addictive gambling.
New regulations and policies that came into effect in the UK gave internet
gambling companies an unprecedented level of access to gamblers through new
advertising abilities and different taxing requirements. But even though the
online casinos industry has grown enormously over the past year, the Scottish
government is quick to point out that the industry is not sufficiently dedicated
to funding problem gambling provisions.
The UK Gambling Commission may address the lack of social responsibility related
to funding for problem gambling programs, the Scottish government is developing
a new taxing regulation that would quickly provide needed funds for problem
gambling programs. Specifically, a Scottish politician, Kenneth Gibson suggests
that “a mandatory levy on all gambling firms operating in Scotland must be
established.”
Gibson is appalled at what the online casinos gambling industry has been able to
get away with, he elaborates that the voluntary donation system was largely
ineffective and that “it is simply not acceptable for gambling firms to make a
fortune in profits from the Scottish people while largely ignoring their social
responsibility to help educate people of the dangers of gambling and contribute
to the treatment of gambling addicts."
With online casinos gambling reaching world-wide highs, problem gambling is
something that is not going to fix itself. Social responsibility from the
internet gambling industry and attention from individual governments is
essential to keeping problem and underage gambling under control. |
