German Ban Might Not Last Long

The foreign online casinos gambling ban in Germany may last a shorter time than many assume now that the Administrative Coutry of Schleswig has referred the issue to the European Commission and European Court of Justice. The German government has passed protectionist internet gambling legislation that came into effect just last month that doesn’t sit well with other countries in the EU. The European Commission warned Germany that passing legislation that supports a state-run monopoly would violate EU trade policies that apply to all of the countries that are a part of the EU – but for some reason Germany doesn’t believe those rules apply to the country.

Germany has in fact gone through with the legislation that created a state monopoly on online casinos and internet betting – but without the support of the Administrative Court of Schleswig – the ban might not last too long. Germany asserted claims that several countries in fact use – that the state run monopoly protects Germans from underage gambling and gambling addiction. And while that can be true to an extent, an open online casinos industry with appropriate regulations in place can be just as secure and safe for gamblers.

And Schleswig isn’t alone in speaking out against the German ban, several of the top online casinos and betting companies in the EU are pressuring the Commission to press Germany to open the internet gambling industry quickly.

The General Secretary of the European Gaming and Betting Association, Sigrid Ligne, commented on the European Commission’s commitment to making EU countries conform with EU law regarding online gambling. He notes, “This decisive action against the German Interstate Treaty and Swedish poker monopoly sends a clear message to all EU countries maintaining or instigating antiquated protectionist gaming regulations. We applaud the commencement of infringement procedures and encourage the Commission to extend these proceedings against other countries that are also contravening EU law."

The Commission is sure to resolve this issue quickly with the assistance of other nations and companies with a vested interest in the German internet casinos industry.
