Holland Casino a Possible Monopoly
Some in the Dutch government are pushing for a government-run online casinos
gambling monopoly. But after warnings from the European Commission about
violations of EU policy, a vote was postponed last Tuesday. Holland Casino
already has a monopoly on the land gambling industry in the country, but the EC
has sent warnings to the Dutch government about passing any further legislation
that bans other countries from accessing the Dutch online casinos market. There
is little indication if the threats from the Commissioner will halt the Dutch
government from passing the ban, but many in the industry anticipated that the
senators would not have voted in majority favor of a state gambling monopoly.
A closed online casinos gambling market violates the EU principles of free-trade
among EU member states the Commission is responsible for monitoring the nations
that seek to violate those policies and principles. There is currently very
little regulation in the Netherlands concerning internet gambling, but if a
foreign gambling ban passes, it will certainly not the only nation with
exclusionary online casinos practices – Germany just recently banned foreign
internet gambling companies and Sweden has monopolized the Swedish industry for
years with the country’s state-run Svenske Spel gambling monopoly,
Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin halted a vote in the Netherland’s senate
that would have determined if Holland Casino could develop and online gambling
site. At this point Holland is in the process of developing and internet site
through the software provider Cryptologic. Cyrptologic is the top software
provider for the international gambling industry, so if the government monopoly
does pass vote at least the Dutch will have a fantastic gambling platform to
use. |
