Enough with the Online Casinos Monopolies
The European Commission may have simply had enough of the blatant disregard for
EU policies regarding free trade between the EU nations. Two EU nations are
still violating both EU policy and EC requests that the countries cease the
government run online casinos gambling monopolies. Sweden has a long-standing
government monopoly, Svenske Spel, that generates a large amount of money for
the country, while Germany just recently reinforced the country’s online casinos
and betting monopoly with legislation that took effect on the first of the year.
In the past many countries have joked that the European Commission is not quick
to act on violations of EU policy, but with outrage from the online casinos
industry and other countries that have open trade borders, the EC and the
European Court of Justice may act sooner than most assumed.
Most in the online casinos industry attribute the latest warnings from the
Commission to the recent German gambling ban, but others are just glad it’s
happening no matter what it took to cause the Commission to take action. The
Commission has renewed warnings to both of the countries that they are in
violation, but most assume that the case will be forced to the ECJ before either
government actually alters online casinos legislation. |
