Anti-Online Casinos Gambling Sentiments
There are very few individuals or companies able to voice a legitimate opinion
in favor of upholding the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA),
but naturally there is always someone willing to attempt the near impossible.
Besides a small number of politicians (namely those Congressmen who drafted the
UIGEA) who still back the U.S. online casinos gambling ban – many have not taken
one side versus the other, and there are a growing number backing the repeal or
neutralization of the UIGEA. But amidst the growing support for the licensing
and regulation of U.S. online casinos gambling is a lone voice – Prime Table
Games founder Derek Webb.
Prime Table Games is based out of Las Vegas and specifically provides services
for the land gambling industry. For the most part, the land casinos gambling
industry has taken a neutral stance on the online casinos gambling debate – the
land gambling entities in Las Vegas are backing Shelly Berkley’s proposal for a
one-year full study on the full effects and potential of a U.S. internet
gambling industry. So it’s interesting that Webb so adamantly supports
anti-online casinos gambling legislation that he would go so far as to publish
his opposition in the Wall Street Journal – the international version no less.
Webb is an outspoken opponent of U.S. online casinos gambling and has made
statements against the industry in the past, but these latest statements were
timed to coincide with the Congressional hearing that took place last week to
discuss the effectiveness of the proposed UIGEA enforcement regulations.
Webb observed in his full page Wall Street Journal advertisement, "It is well
known that there are off-shore based Internet gaming operators who are engaged
in deceptive practices with American consumers and international players, and
there is no adequate system in place to ensure full and appropriate regulation.
Congress needs to take action soon, or these practices will only get worse."
Webb accompanied his WSJ statement with other statements regarding online
casinos gambling to the press – all of which addressed issues with safety and
tackling funding issues concerning problem gambler support programs.
