Dispute Negotiations Resume
A dispute settlement has been submitted to Antigua in the ongoing online casinos
dispute case that has involved the international internet gambling industry.
Every country was greatly affected by the United States’ withdrawal from the
international internet gambling industry, but Antigua’s economy in particular
was devastated by the U.S Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA)
which blocks financial transactions between online casinos and U.S. financial
institutions and banks. A previous dispute resolution and negotiation through
the WTO and between the U.S. and Antigua just ended, yet Antigua has filed
another request for arbitration in the issue because U.S. trade representatives
are still stalling negation talks.
The recent settlement offer would seem like one step further for the resolution
of the ongoing online casinos gambling dispute, but apparently Antigua is not
entirely pleased with the contents of the U.S. settlement offer which was late
in coming anyway. Although no official statement in the issue has been made
public at this point, the Antiguan Minister of Finance and the Economy, Dr.
Errol Cort noted, that the two countries planned to issue a joint statement
regarding the online casinos gambling dispute settlement. The news media
anticipate that both the US Trade Representatives and Antigua will announce a
joint statement on the latest settlement offer.
But even so, Antigua’s main lawyer on the case, Mark Mendel noted that the
dispute arbitration process at the WTO concerning the online casinos gambling
has already begun and the two nations will once again face off in front of an
international body of WTO officials – this is certainly an area that Antigua
would take the issue because the small nation has already won a handful of other
internet gambling related cases against the U.S. in the past several years, and
this online gambling debate is another area where the U.S. is clearly in the
wrong. |
