It's a Private Matter

There are tons of reasons why the U.S. Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) is a hindrance more than it helps any single industry. The Act is designed to block online casinos gambling at the financial institutions level. Really though the Act has created controversy and debate in the United States and in the international internet gambling industry. Everyone from the American Banking Association to the European Union have raised concerns about the UIGEA and the proposed supportive online casinos gambling regulations. But really, Barney Frank brought up one of the largest concerns, at least in the U.S. – the issue of personal freedom and privacy – something inherent to the Constitution and the American way of life.

Congressman Barney Frank is perhaps the most outspoken politician on the current online casinos gambling concerns, and he had a lot to say on the issue. According to Congressman Frank, the “rather bizarre piece of legislation” known as the UIGEA and supporting proposed regulations create a conflict for the financial sectors essentially, "a conflict between the obligation imposed on you by the act...and the privacy expectations of your customers."

One of the strongest points though on the privacy debate centers on the fact that the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department seem to have left concerns for American privacy completely off their radar when drafting the online casinos gambling regulations. The proposed regulations use the words “monitor” and “identify” both 18 and 61 times respective, but they fail to even mention privacy concerns – and that’s a real problem according to Congressman Frank.
